Shingle Roofing in Glendale, AZ
Composition shingle is the original roof on many of older Glendale's ranches. The 1957 brick ranches in Glendale Gardens were built with low-sloped asphalt shingle roofs and two-foot eaves, and 1950s ranches around the 85301 ZIP still list composition roofs today. On a slope that shallow, the underlayment carries more of the load, so that is where we spend our effort.
What a shingle roof in Glendale costs depends on
Typical totals from our price sheet: about $7,500–$9,500 for a 2,000 sq ft roof, $11,250–$14,250 for 3,000 sq ft and $15,000–$19,000 for 4,000 sq ft ($3.75–$4.75 per square foot of roof), plus about 5% on a two-story house. See every range on our pricing page.
The shingle grade sets the baseline: three-tab, architectural or designer. Then it is roof area and pitch, the number of old layers to remove, decking repairs, underlayment, and how many hips, valleys, vents and wall transitions the roof has. A plain Glendale Gardens gable is a simpler job than a later Sands Estates roof with intersecting hips. Our post on shingle roof pricing explains what separates one quote from another. Low slopes and two-foot eaves on Glendale's brick ranches
Glendale Gardens is 32 brick homes built in 1957 and 1958, and its nomination describes low-sloped gable or hip roofs with eaves running two feet past the walls, covered in asphalt shingle. Water moves slowly off a roof like that. It lingers at the eaves and in any valley, and old felt in those spots dries out and splits before the rest of the roof does. Why felt fails in high-water areas shows the pattern. Our answer is self-adhering underlayment across the deck. It seals around every nail, so slow water has no hole to find.
The same goes for streets outside the historic districts. A 1950 ranch in the Philips Addition, a 1953 ranch in Rancho Viejo and a 1971 ranch in Westdale Estates all list composition roofs.
Hips, valleys and vents on later ranches
Sands Estates was built in phases from 1947 to 1966, and its nomination notes that the later homes got more complex roofs, with more intersecting hips and hip-on-gable forms. Every one of those intersections is a valley or hip that has to be cut and sealed by hand. Vents add to it. A vent sitting in a valley acts like a dam, so on a reroof we move it to a clean section between trusses and flash it there. Why we moved this roof vent shows one.
Storms like the August 10, 2026 one, with gusts past 50 mph, tear brittle tabs off first. New shingles laid flat with full overlap, over underlayment that has stuck itself to the deck, are what hold through the next one.
Historic houses
In Catlin Court, Floralcroft and the other districts, Glendale's Historic Preservation Element asks that repairs stay consistent with each district's design guidelines. We match the existing roof form and talk through shingle color with you before ordering.
