What we're doing right now is we are putting the ridge caps on this roof. The reason we put the mastic on the tile is to help glue it together in case of a windstorm or anything. It's help secondary protection to ensure these tile don't fly off the roof.

When you look at a beautiful tile roof, you probably notice the classic curves and the way the colors catch the sunlight. What you might not notice is the small, critical details that keep those heavy tiles in place when the weather gets rough. One of the most important parts of this process happens at the very top of your home: the ridge caps.

At Big Red Roofing, we take extra steps during installation that other contractors might skip. One of those steps is applying mastic to glue the ridge caps down. It might sound simple, but this practice is a game changer for the longevity and safety of your roof.

Understanding the Ridge Cap

Before we talk about the glue, let's look at what a ridge cap actually is. The ridge is the highest point on your roof where two sloping sides meet to form a peak. Because this is an open joint, it needs a special type of tile to cover the gap. These are the ridge caps. They look like a semi-circle or a finished trim that runs along the spine of the house.

Their job is to shed water away from the peak and prevent rain from getting underneath the field tiles. Because they sit at the very top, they are the most exposed part of your entire roofing system. They catch the brunt of the wind and the full force of the sun.

What is Mastic?

In the roofing world, we use a lot of technical terms, but you can think of mastic as a high grade, heavy duty industrial adhesive. It is a thick, waterproof paste that stays flexible even after it dries. Unlike standard glue that might crack when the temperature changes, mastic is designed to expand and contract with the heat of the summer and the chill of the winter.

When we install your ridge caps, we don't just rely on mechanical fasteners like nails or screws. We apply a generous amount of this mastic to the underside of the tile where it overlaps the one beneath it. This creates a powerful bond between the pieces of clay or concrete.

Secondary Protection Against the Wind

The primary reason we glue these caps down is for wind resistance. Think of a windstorm like a giant vacuum. As air rushes over the peak of your roof, it creates uplift. Because ridge caps sit high up, the wind can get underneath the edges and try to peel them off.

If a ridge cap blows away, it creates a domino effect. It exposes the wood structure underneath to driving rain and can cause other tiles to loosen. By using mastic to glue the tiles together, we create a unified barrier. The glue acts as a secondary layer of protection. If a nail ever rattles loose or a fastener fails, the mastic holds the tile in place so it does not fly off the roof and cause damage to your property or your neighbors.

Long Term Durability

Tile roofs are famous for lasting decades, but they only last that long if they stay put. Over time, houses settle and shift. In addition, the constant vibration from heavy winds can eventually wear down traditional metal fasteners.

When we glue the ridge caps, we are essentially reinforcing the entire peak of the house. This prevents the tiles from rattling or shifting out of alignment over the years. It keeps the roof looking sharp and prevents small leaks that often start at the ridge line. We believe that doing the job right the first time means using every tool at our disposal to ensure your home is secure.

Quality You Can Trust

At Big Red Roofing, we believe that the details you cannot see from the ground are just as important as the ones you can. Gluing ridge caps is a standard part of our process because we want your roof to stand up to whatever the elements throw at it. It is about providing peace of mind and a roof that stays intact for the long haul.
